Ciego de Avila was founded in 1538 by the conquistador Jácome de Avila, it was just a large farm in the middle of wood. By 1840, it was declared a city and is the major producer of pineapples and other citric fruits in the country. Dominated by 20th century architecture, it is a town of two storey houses with Neo-classical columns, an impressive town hall and theatre. Ciego de Avila receives few visitors and they are mostly on their way to the Cayos in Jardines del Rey archipielago.
